based on solute-solvent interactions, arrange the following in order of increasing solubility in n-octane and explain.
Cyclohexane, KCI, CH3OH, CH3CN
Solution
N octane is a non polar liquid, Non polar always dissolve in non polar easily and cannot dissolve in Ionic substance.
Cyclohexane and n-octane both are non-polar. Hence, they mix easily
KCl is an ionic compound so KCI will not dissolve in n-octane.
CH3OH and CH3CN both are polar but CH3OH is more polar than CH3CN.
So it will less soluble as compare to CH3CN.We get
Cyclohexane: non-polar
KCl    : ionic
CH3OH        : polar covalent
CH3CN        : weakly polar covalent
Hence the order of solubility will be KCI < CH3OH < CH3CN < Cyclohexane.
