Calculate the osmotic pressure in pascals exerted by a solution prepared by dissolving 1.0 g of polymer of molar mass 185,000 in 450 mL of water at 37°C.
Solution
Given that
Mass of polymer = 1.0 g
Molar mass of polymer = 185,000
Volume of water, V = 450 mL = 0.45 L (1 liter = 1000 ml )
Temperature, T = (37 + 273)K = 310 K (add 273 to convert in Kelvin )
Use formula
Number of moles of the polymer = 1/ 185000 = 5.41 × 10 – 6
Use formula of osmotic pressure
Plug the values we get
= 30.98 Pa
Answer 30.98 pa
