Henry’s
law constant for CO2 in water is 1.67 × 108 Pa at 298 K. Calculate
the quantity of CO2 in 500 mL of soda water when packed under 2.5
atm CO2 pressure at 298 K.
Solution
given that
Pressure of CO2 = 2.5 atm
1 atm = 1.01325 × 105 Pa
So that
Pressure of CO2= 2.5 ×
1.01325 × 105 Pa = 2.533125 × 105 Pa
KH = 1.67 × 108
Pa
According to Henry’s law:
p = KH × X
X = p /
KH = 2.533125 × 105 / 1.67
× 108 = 1.52 x 10–3
But
We have 500 mL of soda water so that
Volume of water = 500 mL
[Neglecting the amount of soda present]
Density of water = 1 g/ ml
Use formula mass = volume × density
we get
500 mL of water = 500 g of water
Molar mass of water(H2O)
= 18 g mol-1
Use formula
Number of mole of water = 500 / 18 =
27.78 mol of water
Now use the formula
of mole fraction
Value of mole fraction is very small
so it is negligible as compared to 1
We get
1.52 × 10–3 = nCO2
/ 27.78
After calculation we get
nCO2 = 0.042 mol
molar mass of CO2 = 12 +
2 × 16 = 44 g mol - 1
use formula
mass = molar mass × number of moles
=
(0.042 × 44)g
= 1.848 g
can u say how did u get 500g as the mass of water
ReplyDeleteWe neglected the amount of soda in 500ml soda water
DeleteWhy? You have neglected amount of soda.
DeleteAs Approx 1l=1kg
DeleteIt is Obvious that 500ml=500g
thank bhai
DeleteJust assumed 1ml as 1g
DeleteThnx
DeleteBut how could u neglect the amount of soda present?
It's given in the question
Delete1gm/mlso 500gm =500ml
Deletebecause 1ML=1GM so 500ML=500GM
DeleteThank u.The steps are very clearly written which can be understood easily
ReplyDeleteDensity of water is 1g/ml
ReplyDeleteformula of mass = volume x density
so that mass = 500 ml x 1 g/ml = 500 g
super tq sir
DeleteYou are welcome Pannaga
ReplyDeleteThank u so much Nirapendra ji
ReplyDeletethank you Nirapendra sir...
ReplyDeletewhy is nC02 ignored in denominator while not in numerator
ReplyDeleteNeglection is done by comparing two quantities......in above case, moles of CO2 is much less than H2O hence ignored
DeleteVery nicely elaborated
ReplyDeleteVery nicely elaborated
ReplyDeleteWhy water is taken.. In the problem soda water is given
ReplyDeleteDensity of soda water n normal water nearly same
DeleteBut in telugu akademi book of Andhra pradesh board they gave answer as 0.084mol?Pls help
ReplyDeleteThank you
ReplyDeleteTo be exact...moles of CO2 is 1.82.... in this question....and I didn't neglect the mole fraction of CO2 in the denominator
ReplyDeleteThankyou sir
ReplyDeleteThankyou sir
ReplyDeleteSir,can we solve it by converting the pascal unit in atm ?
ReplyDelete2.5co2 in that Replace 1.67×10 square kpa co2 then can u say how v solve it sir
ReplyDelete2.5co2 in that Replace 1.67×10 square kpa co2 then can u say how v solve it sir
ReplyDeleteCan u say how u got 0.42 moles
ReplyDeleteCan you tell m how is soda neglected?
ReplyDeleteCan you tell m how is soda neglected?
ReplyDeleteIf u don't neglect nco2 and write the whole formula then too at last nco2 will be coming as 0.042
ReplyDeleteYour blog is just great nd the way u solve the questions is veey easy to understand😊🙃
ReplyDeleteThat's so nice idea. I agree with you abcya
