If the density of some lake water is 1.25 g mL-1 and contains 92 g of Na+ ions per kg of water, calculate the molality of Na+ ions in the lake.

If the density of some lake water is 1.25 g mL-1 and contains 92 g of Na+ ions per kg of water, calculate the molality of Na+ ions in the lake.
Solution :
Density of lake water = 1.25 g mL-1
Amount of Na+ ion in one kg of water = 92 g Atomic mass of Na+ = 23 g mo1-1 Let V ml of lake water be taken.
Let take mass of solvent(water) = 1 Kg
Then mass of Na+ ions  = 92 g
Number of moles of  = 92/23 = 4  (molar mass of Na is 23g/mol)
Plug the values we get
Molality = 4 /1 = 4m
Solution molality of Na + ions = 4m

  1. Why have they mentioned density of lake water?

  2. Becoz density of pure water is 1gm ml-1 but lake water has so many impurities so they have to mention the density of lake water

  3. What is it's purpose if we don't use the density of lake water?I mean they already specified that it's lake water.I used the density and the mass of lake water(1L) came out to be 1250 g.And then the molality came out to be 3.2 m.Tell me where am I wrong.Please.

    1. You are wrong because you used 1250 g which is mass of water + impurity. You obtain molarity or molality for either solute or solvent

    2. You should also subtract the mass of solute i.e Na+ ions from 1250 g of solution in order to get mass of solvent as 1158 g then you can easily find molality as 3.45 m .This is absolutely correct answer.

    1. That's molality weight is taken instead of volume so litre will not be considered and in the ques weight is given itself

  10. Why u not use molar mass 22
It is Na+ ion not Na

  12. This question is wrong if i am not wrong.we have to tell cbse authors to watch out this question.and explain us if its correct...

  13. If it is molarity instead of molality then what will be the answer

  14. Then what about 1.25g mL-1?

  15. Why. Ncert mention the density as their is no use
