Question 9. Pratyush took sulphur powder on a spatula and heated it. He collected the gas evolved by inverting a test tube over it, as shown in figure below.
(a) What will be the action of gas on
(i) dry litmus paper?
(ii) moist litmus paper?
(b) Write a balanced chemical
equation for the reaction taking place.
Answer: (a)
(i)No Change in colour of litmus paper.
(ii) The colour of litmus paper will turn red because sulphur is a non-metal and the oxides of non-metal are acidic in nature.

    Sulfur exists as an octatomic molecule so the reaction must've been S8 +8O2-> 8SO2 or if the reaction which u gave is the right,then can u explain what is wrong with my reasoning? I am confused about this.

    1. S8 is form of sulphur and found in nature natively and here we took some limited quantity of sulphur so s should be taken not s8

    1. Usually sulphur is denoted by S and not S8 but for phosphorus it is always P4
      Don't ask me why bcoz my teacher told me this
