Q 20: Classify each of the following as being either a p–type or an n–type semiconductor: (i) Ge doped with In (ii) B doped with Si.

Q 20: Classify each of the following as being either a p–type or an n–type semiconductor:
(i) Ge doped with In             (ii) B doped with Si.
Solution:
(i) Ge is a 14th group element and In is a 13th group element .When 14th group element is doped with In a 13th group element, a electron deficit hole created .Hence Ge doped with In will generate p–type semiconductor.

(ii)B is a 13th group element and Si is a 14th group element .When 13th group element is doped with In a 14th group element, created hole will generate n–type semiconductor.

    1. When Si ( 14 element group) is doped with B ( 13 element group), formation of p-type semiconductor takes place.
but here B is doped in Si so answer will n–type semiconductor. in second part
